Therapy for Therapists

“You should know better, you’re a therapist.”
“Can’t you just be your own therapist?”
Tired of hearing these comments from others? I’m a firm believer that therapy is for everyone—even therapists! Just because you are in this field does not mean you are perfect and does not mean that you are not equally deserving of help. Trained by Harry Aponte in the Person of the Therapist technique, this therapy focuses on the unique challenges those in the helping professions may face. The Person of the Therapist theory focuses on therapists knowing themselves well, while exploring their own “signature theme” that may be activated in their clinical work. Issues of transference, countertransference, and codependency are entwined with one’s own biases of contextual variables, with the ultimate goal of knowing oneself better.

Finding a therapist while being in the helping professions can be especially challenging, with concerns of judgement, privacy, and empathy. Being in the helping professions, you should be able to receive help in a way that is practical, with a non-judgmental/curious approach that can provide a safe space to process and explore your own personal struggles juxtaposed with the important work you do. This can be a space for you to process issues that are triggered or activated for you in your work, or simply a space for you to receive care in a confidential and relatable manner, with a non-judgmental approach.
